“Stop Distracting Police With Videos”- IGP Disu Tunji Reveals How Viral Police Clips Are Affecting Security Operations

• IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu has warned Nigerians against indiscriminate recording and sharing of videos involving police officers, especially for content creation.
• He said misleading videos can fuel misinformation and urged the public to engage responsibly while supporting police accountability.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has cautioned Nigerians against the indiscriminate recording and circulation of videos involving police officers, particularly footage captured during official duties for content creation purposes.

Speaking during an interactive session with members of the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN) in Abuja, Disu expressed concern that the growing trend could affect officers’ morale, distort public perception, and interfere with ongoing security operations.

The police chief also condemned the circulation of old or misleading videos being presented as recent incidents, warning that such content contributes to misinformation and unnecessary public panic.

According to him, “members of the public should not distract police attention with all these video clips. We are trying our best to address the genuine ones, but what is happening now is that people are coming up with old video clips that happened a very long time ago. This is not acceptable”.

Disu, however, reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to accountability, transparency, professionalism, and respect for human rights.

He emphasized that while public scrutiny remains important, there is a need to balance it with the realities of police operations and the welfare of officers carrying out their duties.

According to him, “Police personnel continue to make significant sacrifices in the discharge of their constitutional duties and deserve public understanding and support. Yes, accountability is important, and we remain committed to transparency.

“However, recordings and public engagements involving police officers must be done responsibly and should not be used to harass officers or undermine operational effectiveness.”

The IGP further noted that many officers work under difficult and dangerous conditions while striving to maintain public safety and protect lives and property across the country.

According to him, “Police officers operate under extremely challenging conditions, often risking their lives to protect citizens and maintain public safety. It is important that public conduct and media coverage do not discourage officers who are committed to doing the right thing.”
