Teachers Stage Solidarity Rally in Asaba, Demand Release of Kidnapped Colleagues and Learners

Teachers under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Delta State Wing, on Tuesday staged a peaceful solidarity rally in Asaba, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of teachers and schoolchildren abducted by kidnappers in different parts of the country.

The rally, which commenced at the NUT State Secretariat along DLA Road, proceeded to Government House, Asaba, where participants appealed to government authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing the freedom of the victims.

Receiving the protesters on behalf of the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Kingsley Emu, assured the teachers of the government’s support and concern over the disturbing trend of kidnappings affecting educators and learners.

Emu noted that the state government shares in the pain of the affected families, stressing that public officials are also parents who understand the emotional trauma caused by such incidents.

He urged citizens to continue praying for the safe return of those in captivity while assuring that government and security agencies are working tirelessly to secure their release.

“The cries of Nigerians over insecurity are being heard, and the government is doing everything within its powers to ensure that those held captive regain their freedom,” he said, while appealing to the teachers to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

Speaking during the rally, the Delta State Chairman of NUT, Comrade Dickson Poubeni, expressed deep concern over the killing of some education workers and the continued detention of others, including schoolchildren.

Poubeni called on the Federal Government, Oyo State Government, NUT, ANCOPSS, security agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to strengthen efforts through dialogue and lawful means to secure the release of the abducted victims.

He lamented the uncertainty surrounding the welfare and condition of those in captivity, noting that reports and emotional appeals from affected families highlight the harsh and inhumane conditions the victims may be enduring.
According to him, the nationwide solidarity rally was organised to draw national attention to the plight of kidnapped teachers and learners and to demand urgent action for their rescue.

He emphasised that teachers across the country would continue to advocate for the safe return of their colleagues and students until every victim is reunited with their families.

The NUT Delta State Wing reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all lawful efforts aimed at securing the freedom of the abducted persons and ensuring safer learning environments across Nigeria.

Participants at the rally also called for stronger security measures to protect schools, teachers, and students from criminal attacks.

Among those present were former NUT Chairman, Comrade Titus Okotie, the Union Secretary, Comrade Dan Basime, and representatives of teachers from various parts of Delta State.
