Tinubu Commissions Federal High Court Judges’ Quarters, Says Judicial Independence Requires Action

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday said judicial independence must be supported by concrete investments in judges’ welfare and security, as he commissioned 10 residential quarters for Justices of the Federal High Court in Katampe District, Abuja.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President said the housing project was part of his administration’s broader efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and entrench the rule of law under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The commissioning marked the second major judicial housing project inaugurated in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) within two days, following the opening of 10 residential quarters for Court of Appeal Justices on Tuesday.

Tinubu said the provision of decent accommodation for judicial officers was essential to guaranteeing an independent and effective judiciary.

“We are not merely commissioning houses today; we are reinforcing one of the strongest pillars of our democracy. The judiciary remains central to the survival of our constitutional order, and its independence must be protected not only in words but through deliberate action,” he said.

According to the President, judges can only perform their constitutional responsibilities effectively when they operate in a secure and dignified environment.

“Judicial independence is not an abstract concept. It requires practical support. We cannot expect our judges to dispense justice without fear or favour if their welfare, safety and peace of mind are not assured,” he stated.

Tinubu said the newly completed quarters symbolise the nation’s respect for the judiciary and its commitment to ensuring that judicial officers enjoy the comfort and security required to carry out their duties.

The President also applauded the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for his exceptional performance in delivering critical infrastructure projects across Abuja.

“When I assigned the task of transforming Abuja into a modern capital city, I was confident in your capacity to deliver. From road networks to institutional infrastructure such as this, you have demonstrated that results remain the true measure of leadership,” he said.

He urged the beneficiaries of the housing estate to continue upholding the principles of fairness, integrity and transparency in the administration of justice.

“As we provide these homes, we look forward to your continued commitment to strengthening our democracy through impartial and timely justice,” the President added.
