…Criticises Onanuga’s Remarks On Hunger

ABUJA – The African Democratic Con­gress (ADC) has criticised com­ments by presidential spokes­man, Bayo Onanuga, on the state of the economy, saying his remarks suggest a disconnect between the Federal Govern­ment and the realities facing many Nigerians.

ADC, in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja by its Na­tional Publicity Secretary, Mal­lam Bolaji Abdullahi, described Onanuga’s comments on hun­ger and hardship as insensitive and reflection of what it called a broader failure by the admin­istration to appreciate the eco­nomic challenges confronting citizens.

According to the ADC, many Nigerians are grappling with rising living costs, including higher food prices, transporta­tion expenses and increasing financial pressures on house­holds and businesses.

The party argued that the country’s economic difficulties are linked to policy decisions taken by the current admin­istration, which it said have contributed to declining pur­chasing power and increased hardship for many citizens.

“The reality is that many Nigerians are experiencing significant economic challeng­es in their daily lives. These ex­periences are evident in homes, markets, workplaces and com­munities across the country,” the statement said.

The ADC further stated that governments should continu­ally engage with citizens and assess the impact of their pol­icies on ordinary people, stress­ing that effective leadership requires understanding and responding to public concerns.

While acknowledging the government’s emphasis on in­frastructure development, the party maintained that econom­ic well-being remains a critical measure of governance.

“The first responsibility of government is to create condi­tions that enable citizens to earn a living, run businesses and live with dignity,” the party said.

The ADC called on the Feder­al Government to recognise the concerns being expressed by Ni­gerians and take practical steps to address economic challenges and improve living conditions across the country.

The statement added that acknowledging citizens’ expe­riences and responding with effective policies would help rebuild public confidence and demonstrate greater respon­siveness to the needs of Nige­rians.
