In one of the early surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their Group K opener at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. A vibrant crowd of over 60,000 witnessed DR Congo claim their first-ever World Cup point and goal, frustrating a star-studded Portuguese side that entered the tournament among the favourites to lift the trophy.
João Neves gave Portugal a flying start with a sixth minute header, but Yoane Wissa produced a moment of magic in first-half stoppage time to level the scores. Despite dominating possession and territory for long spells, Roberto Martínez’s men could not break down a disciplined and resilient DR Congo defense. Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi also produced important saves to preserve the historic point. As the clock ticked down, Portugal’s frustration grew, with several shots blocked or sailing wide. Ronaldo, though industrious, was well marshaled by the DR Congo backline.
For Portugal, young midfielder João Neves impressed with his goal and energy, while Bruno Fernandes worked tirelessly. However, the attack as a unit lacked sharpness. For DR Congo, Yoane Wissa was the standout for his goal and relentless pressing. Mbemba and the entire defensive unit executed the game plan to perfection.
This result marks a monumental achievement for DR Congo, a nation appearing at the World Cup for the first time since 1974. The point gained against a high profile European nation will do wonders for confidence and national pride. For Portugal, dropping points in what was considered their most winnable group fixture raises early questions about their attacking fluidity and squad depth.
Group K, featuring Colombia and Uzbekistan alongside these two sides, now looks highly competitive. Portugal remain favorites to progress but must improve their finishing ahead of tougher tests. DR Congo will take immense belief into their remaining matches.
