Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has responded to recent remarks made by Afrobeats star Davido following their ongoing disagreement over the singer’s advocacy for abducted schoolchildren.
The exchange began after Davido publicly criticised Omokri for explaining why he had yet to assume his diplomatic role in Mexico. In a series of posts shared on his Instagram Story, the music star lashed out at the former presidential aide, using harsh words to express his displeasure.
Reacting to the backlash, Omokri released an open letter on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, addressing the controversy and clarifying his position. He explained why he had earlier condemned Davido’s decision to draw global attention to the kidnapping of schoolchildren in Oyo State during an international event.
The debate stemmed from Davido’s appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert in Los Angeles, where he performed while wearing a customised jacket bearing the names of abducted pupils alongside the message, “Bring Them Home.”
According to Omokri, his criticism was not directed at the children’s plight but at what he viewed as an approach that inadvertently amplified the visibility of criminal groups responsible for such attacks. He argued that the focus should remain on securing the victims’ release and supporting government efforts rather than giving kidnappers international publicity.
Omokri further suggested that Davido’s strong reaction to his comments may have been influenced by public support the singer received from former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, during the controversy.

Yes, I am aware that you were upset at my appeal to you not to use an international platform, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to give publicity to bandits and terrorists. I am also aware that Peter Obi praised you for doing that, which may have made you feel compelled to defend him.
I did that because while your intention may be good and you think you are pressuring the government, the actual effect of what you did is to give publicity to the terrorists and help them spread fear, recruit new members, and raise funds.”
