No fewer than 30 people have been confirmed dead after gunmen launched a fresh attack on Naridon Village in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, reportedly claimed the lives of women and children, while several houses were set ablaze, leaving the community devastated.
Community sources, Ibrahim John and Mallam Katuka, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters.
Residents of the community said at least 30 bodies had been recovered as of Monday, with fears that the death toll could rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
Photographs from the village showed extensive destruction, with several residential buildings reduced to rubble by the fire.
The exact number of those injured or displaced had yet to be confirmed at the time of filing this report, as authorities and residents continued to assess the extent of the attack.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Kauru Local Government Area and other parts of Southern Kaduna, where attacks on communities have become frequent.
Residents and community leaders urged the Kaduna State Government, the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen security in the area and take urgent measures to prevent further attacks.
The assault comes amid a fresh wave of violence in Southern Kaduna.
Last Friday, reports indicated that at least eight people connected to two groups of hostages abducted from Ariko and Awon villages in Kachia Local Government Area had died while in captivity.
According to journalist and former Kaduna State Government spokesperson, Reuben Buhari, seven of the deceased were among residents abducted from Ariko village, while the eighth was a newborn delivered by a woman kidnapped from neighbouring Awon village.
The victims reportedly died after spending more than three months in captivity under harsh conditions, highlighting the persistent insecurity affecting communities across Southern Kaduna.
