The Nigerian Army has urged the students to embrace patriotism, honesty and integrity, as well as shun drug abuse and criminality as part of efforts to build a peaceful and united Nigeria.

i Awolo, made the call during a public speaking engagement at Government Secondary School, Lafia South, as part of activities marking the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).
Awolo, represented by Brig.-Gen. David Nwakonobi, described the annual celebration as a period of reflection and appreciation for the sacrifices of officers and soldiers in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and maintaining peace.
He said that the celebration also reaffirmed the nation’s collective commitment to unity, resilience and national development.
“The Nigerian Army stands as a symbol of strength, protecting lives and fostering stability across our land.
“As we celebrate, let us also recognise the families who support these heroes and the communities that benefit from their service.
“May this day inspire us all to uphold the values of patriotism, service and unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s progress,” he said.
Nwakonobi said the Nigerian Army was celebrating 163 years of existence, adding that the activities commenced with Juma’at prayers and interdenominational church services held nationwide.
He said the public speaking engagement formed part of the week-long activities preceding the grand finale scheduled for July 6 in Port Harcourt.
The commander encouraged the students to consider careers in the Nigerian Army, noting that the institution offered opportunities for selfless service to the nation.
Also speaking, Lt.-Col. Andekuba Karma, Acting Director of Education of the command, and other resource persons delivered lectures on patriotism, honesty and integrity, the dangers of keeping bad company, and the need to avoid drug and substance abuse.
Karma said every citizen had a responsibility to contribute to national development, noting that the military remained committed to defending the country’s territorial integrity and protecting lives and property.
In his remarks, Mr Adamu Tanko the Principal of Government Secondary School, Lafia South, described the programme as highly educative and impactful.
Tanko commended the army for exposing the students to values that would promote discipline, unity and responsible citizenship.
He appealed to the army to sustain the initiative, saying it would positively influence both students and members of the wider community.
Also speaking, Rukaya Ayuba, the Head Girl of the school, and Nazifi Lawal, the Head Boy, thanked the Nigerian Army for the engagement.
They said that the programme had deepened their understanding of patriotism, respect for national symbols and the dangers of drug abuse.
The students also expressed willingness to pursue careers in the Nigerian Army.
The event featured career talks on opportunities in the Nigerian Army as well as an interactive question-and-answer session with the students. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng).
