The Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Peter Akpe, has urged women to take the lead in promoting value reorientation and social re-engineering to help build a better society. Akpe made the call on Wednesday when a delegation of the Diri/Akpe Women Support Group from Bayelsa West Senatorial District paid him a solidarity visit at the Government House in Yenagoa.
The deputy governor said women play important roles in nation-building and could help address insecurity and other societal challenges by promoting positive behavioural change in families and communities.
He stressed the importance of contentment, hard work and adherence to acceptable standards in both private and public life, saying these values were essential for sustainable development. Akpe, who received the group alongside his wife, Favour Akpe, thanked the women for the visit and described the formation of the group as a thoughtful initiative.
He, however, advised members not to make political gains their primary objective, urging them to use the platform to build relationships, support one another and develop their capacities. Akpe also cautioned against making irrational political decisions, saying sustainable relationships were important for effective political engagement.
Earlier, the leader of the group, Ebizi Ndiomu-Brown, pledged the group’s support for the administration of Governor Douye Diri.Ndiomu-Brown, who represents Sagbama Constituency III in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, also said the group would work with others towards the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. The visit was attended by government officials, political stakeholders and former commissioners, among others.
