Court Sentences Three Suspected Bandits To Life Improvement Over Oriire School Abduction

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three persons linked to the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to life imprisonment.

Justice Salim Ibrahim handed down the sentence on Thursday, ordering that the life imprisonment should take effect from the date of the convicts’ arrest, according to Channels Television.

Before sentencing, counsel to the convicts pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, arguing that the defendants were first-time offenders who had voluntarily pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against them.

The defence lawyer submitted that the guilty plea reflected genuine remorse and noted that the offences for which they were convicted were not directly related to carrying out the kidnapping.

He further told the court that the convicts were family men with wives, children and elderly parents who depended on them for their livelihood.

The defence therefore urged the court to give them “a second chance at life” by imposing a lighter sentence.

However, the prosecution opposed the plea for leniency, contending that the convicts had prior knowledge of those behind the criminal operation and, as responsible citizens, ought to have reported the information to security agencies instead of concealing it.

After considering the submissions of both parties, Justice Ibrahim sentenced the three defendants to life imprisonment, ruling that the sentence would take effect from the date they were arrested.

The judgment marks a significant milestone in the prosecution of suspects connected with the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, a case that attracted widespread public attention and heightened concerns over insecurity in schools.
