Afrobeats star Davido has become the center of online debate after social media users questioned the authenticity of his widely publicized Tesla Cybertruck gift to singer Mayorkun.
The conversation began after Davido shared an Instagram Story announcing that he was gifting the luxury electric pickup truck to his former record label artiste, Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, better known as Mayorkun.
Alongside a photo of the vehicle, Davido wrote, “My gift to you. I love you #iammayorkun,” while tagging an associate with the instruction, “#babzii_chilling pls have it delivered 2moro.”
Although the singer did not disclose the value of the gift, the vehicle shown was a Tesla Cybertruck. The futuristic electric truck is priced between $69,990 and $99,990 in the United States, depending on the model. Once shipping fees and import duties are added, estimates place the cost of a brand-new Cybertruck in Nigeria at roughly ₦200 million to ₦340 million.
What initially appeared to be a generous gesture soon sparked controversy after several internet users claimed the image Davido shared was not an original photograph. According to the critics, the same picture had previously appeared online and was allegedly sourced from Pinterest.
The claims gained more attention after fans pointed to a 2023 report by Dezeen titled “Tesla Cybertruck launched and now in showrooms,” where they said the identical image had been published. This fueled speculation that the photo used in Davido’s post was not taken by him.
The controversy quickly spread across social media, with some users accusing the award-winning singer of creating buzz ahead of an upcoming music release.
Reacting to the post, one X user wrote:
“Davido went to Pinterest app to pick a cyber truck picture to congratulate Mayorkun that he bought car for him, just to chase clout for his very useles$ upcoming album.”
A popular entertainment blog, Wizkid_blogger, also joined the conversation, posting:
“Omo, when this man go stop all this childish behaviour? 30bingos how una wan defend this one now?”
Despite leaving Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) in 2021 to pursue his solo career, Mayorkun has continued to maintain a cordial relationship with Davido, who signed him to the label in 2016 and played a key role in launching his music career.
Neither Davido nor Mayorkun has publicly responded to the allegations surrounding the Cybertruck post as of the time of writing.
