The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of retired military personnel as it convened a one-day strategic retreat with the leadership of military veterans’ associations in Abuja.
The retreat, organised under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, in collaboration with the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers’ Association of Nigeria (RANAO), brought together veterans to discuss welfare, unity and continued national service.
Speaking at the retreat on behalf of the CDS, the Chief of Defence Operations, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, said the Defence Headquarters remained committed to maintaining regular engagement with veterans, describing dialogue as the most effective way to address issues affecting retired personnel.
He said the welfare of military veterans remains a top priority of the Defence Headquarters, adding that efforts were underway to implement the recently approved salary increase and the corresponding pension adjustments through the appropriate statutory processes.
Abdussalam also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to improving the welfare of members of the Armed Forces, urging veterans to remain patient while the necessary procedures for implementation were being completed.
He assured the retired officers that the Defence Headquarters would continue to pursue improved healthcare services, prompt pension payments and enhanced welfare packages for former military personnel.
The retreat also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among veterans’ associations and encouraged retired personnel to remain active contributors to national development by mentoring younger generations and supporting initiatives aimed at promoting national unity and security.
The Defence Headquarters said the engagement reflects its resolve to strengthen relationships with military veterans while ensuring that those who served the country continue to receive the recognition and welfare they deserve.
