Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has expressed confidence in the interim board of Bayelsa United Football Club, saying its members possess the experience and capacity to reposition the club.
The governor spoke on Thursday during the weekly Prosperity Walk at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.
He commended the board for immediately commencing the process of appointing a new technical adviser for the club and urged members to sustain the momentum until tangible results are achieved.
“The calibre of personalities on the board gives me confidence that they will deliver on the assignment,” Diri said.
The governor stressed that his administration would not interfere in the selection of players, insisting that such responsibilities should be left entirely to the coaching crew to ensure accountability.
“I want to appreciate the Bayelsa United Interim Board headed by Dr. Peter Singabele. I am aware they have hit the ground running with the process of appointing a new coach. I charge them to move with speed to ensure new coaches are recruited and players are selected,” he said.
“Players must be selected by the coaches. There will be no interference by the board and no interference by the government. Let the coaches choose the best players so that if anything goes wrong, we will hold them responsible.”
The interim board, headed by Dr. Peter Singabele, was announced last Thursday by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, during the Prosperity Walk.
Speaking on Bayelsa’s preparations to host the 2028 National Sports Festival, Governor Diri reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing critical sporting infrastructure before the event.
He listed the ongoing construction of the 30,000-seat stadium in Igbogene and the 5,000-seat stadium in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, among the key projects.
The governor reiterated that sports development remains a major priority of his administration, describing it as an effective tool for youth engagement, talent discovery and socio-economic development.
