Ebu Community Finally Cut Off As Major Access Road Collapses, Residents Cry Out For Urgent Intervention

Residents of the Ebu community in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State have raised fresh concerns over what they describe as years of neglect following the collapse of the community’s only major access road, effectively cutting off the agrarian settlement from neighbouring communities and key economic routes.

The residents lamented that the federal road, which has remained in a deplorable condition for several years, has now become completely impassable, leaving commuters, farmers, traders, and transport operators stranded.

According to community members, heavy-duty vehicles, including trailers and lorries conveying goods to various parts of Northern Nigeria, can no longer pass through the route following the collapse of a critical section of the road.

Speaking on the development, residents expressed frustration over what they described as the persistent neglect of the community by successive governments at both the federal and state levels.

They noted that repeated appeals to relevant authorities for the rehabilitation of the road had yielded little or no response, despite the strategic importance of the route to economic and social activities in the area.

Ebu has cried for years for government intervention, but our appeals have not been heard. Today, the road has completely collapsed, and our community has been cut off. Farmers can no longer move their produce to markets, traders are counting losses, and transportation has become a nightmare, a resident lamented.

The community, known for its rich agricultural potential, fears that the worsening condition of the road will further undermine economic activities, disrupt the movement of farm produce, and increase the cost of transportation and essential goods.

Residents also expressed concern that Ebu has been largely excluded from government development programmes despite its contributions to the state’s agricultural sector.

They alleged that government attention is often focused on the community only during election periods, while critical infrastructure challenges remain unattended.

Community leaders and concerned citizens have therefore appealed to the Federal Government, the Delta State Government, and relevant agencies to urgently intervene and reconstruct the failed road before the situation deteriorates further.

They warned that continued neglect could have severe economic and social consequences not only for Ebu but also for neighbouring communities that rely on the route for transportation and commercial activities.

As of the time of filing this report, several motorists were reportedly stranded and unable to continue their journeys as the road had become completely inaccessible. Residents continued to call for immediate action to restore access and reconnect Ebu to the rest of Delta State.

The people of Ebu say they remain hopeful that their renewed appeal will finally attract the attention of the authorities and bring an end to decades of infrastructural neglect that have left the community isolated and struggling for survival.
