ABUJA – The monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has risen from about ₦9 billion to more than ₦40 billion since the current administration assumed office, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, disclosed on Thursday.
Wike attributed the sharp increase in revenue to reforms aimed at plugging leakages, strengthening revenue collection and improving transparency in land administration, saying the additional resources had significantly boosted infrastructure development across the nation’s capital.
Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja, the minister said the administration’s aggressive drive to collect ground rents, process Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-Os) and eliminate revenue leakages had transformed the FCT’s financial position.
“When we came on board, our IGR was a mere ₦9 billion a month, but as I speak to you today, we’ve been able to improve it to forty-something billion. So when people now say, ‘Oh, FCT is working, FCT is working,’ it’s working because somebody has made it work,” Wike said.
He stressed that the increase was the result of deliberate policy decisions rather than chance, adding that prudent financial management had enabled the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to undertake critical infrastructure projects across Abuja and the satellite towns.
According to the minister, the improved revenue profile has strengthened the administration’s capacity to deliver roads, bridges and other public facilities while improving service delivery to residents.
Wike said the experience demonstrated the importance of accountability, fiscal discipline and efficient management of public resources in driving development.
He added that the progress recorded by the FCTA underscores what focused leadership and institutional reforms can achieve in improving public sector performance and accelerating infrastructure delivery.
