The Federal Government has renamed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway, with the Minister of Works, David Umahi, saying the move recognises President Bola Tinubu’s long-standing vision for the project.
Umahi announced the decision during a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, where he also disclosed that the President approved a 400-kilometre extension of the Fourth Legacy Highway and the reconstruction of sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Works approved the renaming after consultations with its leadership.
Umahi said Tinubu first conceived the coastal highway project during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State more than two decades ago, adding that the renaming acknowledges his role in bringing the project to reality.
The minister described the first section of the 750-kilometre highway, stretching from Victoria Island to Lekki, as a major infrastructure milestone. He said the 47.47-kilometre, six-lane carriageway includes a 25-metre median reserved for a future railway line.
Umahi also announced that the Fourth Legacy Highway would be extended by 400 kilometres, increasing its length to about 1,100 kilometres and extending the route into Taraba State.
He added that President Tinubu also approved the dualisation of 400 kilometres of the East-West Road, the reconstruction of sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway with reinforced concrete pavement, the completion of the Ibi Bridge in Taraba State and the construction of the 5.76-kilometre Lao Bridge.
