As part of its social responsibility to its host communities, Red Cross Nigeria said that it has trained no fewer than seventy-two flood rapid response teams in six Kebbi local councils believed to be prone to flash floods in Kebbi State.
This was disclosed on Friday by Red Cross disaster management officer, Nwoacha Charity Ekeoma. According to her, twelve persons were drawn from the six benefiting local governments and were trained for two weeks on rapid response to floods.
She further said that each of them was given river gauges which they will use to alert communities on impending floods.
The training intends to reduce flood impact during and after flooding, she mentioned, and directors of social services in the selected local governments, which include fire service personnel, police, and civil defense corps as members of the rapid response team.
However, the stakeholders meeting convened to validate actions and responses from participants was geared towards guiding Red Cross and Kebbi State partners, like the humanitarian ministry, on how to sustain the measures put in place to arrest impending flash floods.
” We have trained seventy-two persons on flood rapid response, which we have selected from the six local governments to include Shanga, Yauri,Koko/ Besse, Argungu, Ngaski, and Bagudo, and we have installed water gauges to aid their work”.
The stakeholders meeting held at Shagalinku Hotel was attended by representatives of people with Disabilities, uniform and non-uniform members of the Red Cross.
