Gov Buni Inaugurates 12-Man C’ttee To Establish Yobe Biomedical Engineering Institute

The Yobe State governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni has inaugurated a Steering Committee to commence the process for the establishment of the Yobe Institute of Biomedical Engineering Technology (YIBET), in a move aimed at positioning the state as a leading centre for healthcare technology, innovation and human capital development.

A statement issued by the Coordinator/Liaison officer on Media office of the SSG Ibrahim Baba Saleh said the approval conveyed and signed by the Acting Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje, reflects Governor Buni’s commitment to investing in education, healthcare and technology-driven development.

According to the statement, the Governor approved the constitution of the Steering Committee in response to the growing global demand for highly skilled professionals in Biomedical and Clinical Engineering adding that the committee was mandated to drive the planning and establishment of the Institute, which is envisioned as a centre of excellence in Biomedical Engineering Technology.

It further said the initiative aligns with the World Health Organization’s projection on the global shortage of Biomedical and Clinical Engineering professionals adding the move will prepare Yobe State for emerging opportunities in healthcare, research, technology and industrial development.

“When established, the Yobe Institute of Biomedical Engineering Technology is expected to serve as a premier institution for training, research, innovation and capacity development in Biomedical and Clinical Engineering Technology.

“It will equip young Nigerians with globally competitive technical skills while positioning Yobe as a hub for producing the skilled workforce required by Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.”

The Steering Committee is chaired by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Mohammed Bello Kawuwa, alongside other members drawn from relevant institutions and sectors to provide technical guidance for the successful establishment of the Institute has the Vice Chancellor of the Yobe State University as the vice chairman while the Permanent Secretary Special Duties, Office of the SSG will serve as secretary of the committee.

The statement added that the establishment of YIBET is expected to strengthen Yobe’s growing profile as a destination for innovation and knowledge-based development, while expanding opportunities for young people to acquire specialised skills that meet international standards.
