When Dr. Alex Otti emerged as the Governor of Abia State in 2023, many people saw it as the beginning of a new chapter for a state that had struggled for years with decaying infrastructure, poor roads, inadequate public facilities and declining public confidence in government.

For decades, Abia had often been described by many as a state with enormous potential but limited development. Residents regularly complained about bad roads, poor drainage systems, weak public services and abandoned projects. The situation became a major issue during the 2023 governorship election as citizens demanded a leader who would not only make promises but also deliver tangible results.

It was in this atmosphere that Otti, a former banker and economist, emerged victorious. Throughout his campaign, he repeatedly promised to rebuild Abia, restore confidence in governance, improve infrastructure, revive the economy and make the welfare of ordinary citizens a priority. Many voters were attracted by his message of transformation. He spoke about fixing roads, improving schools, modernizing healthcare facilities, creating a cleaner environment and restoring the commercial strength of Aba, the state’s economic hub. Three years after taking office, many residents believe those promises are gradually becoming reality.

Across Aba, Umuahia and several communities, signs of development have become visible. Roads that were once nearly impassable have been reconstructed. Traffic management systems have improved. Public schools are receiving attention. Markets are being upgraded. Healthcare facilities are undergoing renovation, while government offices and public spaces are witnessing significant improvements.

One of the first things visitors now notice in parts of Abia is the introduction and restoration of traffic lights.

For years, functioning traffic lights were almost nonexistent in many parts of the state. Major junctions often experienced severe traffic congestion as motorists struggled to navigate intersections without proper traffic control.

Today, modern traffic lights can be seen at strategic locations, especially in Aba and Umuahia. Many residents say the development has brought order to roads that were previously chaotic.

“It may look like a small thing, but traffic lights have changed movement within the city,” said Chinedu Okorie, a commercial driver in Aba. “There is now more discipline on the roads. Before, every junction was a battle.”

Road construction remains perhaps the most visible aspect of Otti’s administration. Several major roads in Aba have either been reconstructed or rehabilitated. Areas that were once notorious for flooding and difficult access have witnessed major improvements.

The famous Port Harcourt Road in Aba, which had become a symbol of neglect for many years, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Residents who had almost lost hope of seeing the road repaired now describe it as one of the most significant projects executed in recent years.

“The Port Harcourt Road project alone convinced many people that this government means business,” said businessman Uche Nwosu. “For years, politicians talked about it but nothing happened. Today, people can see the difference.”

Road projects have also extended to various parts of Umuahia and surrounding communities. The administration has focused on improving accessibility, reducing travel time and boosting economic activities.

Many traders and transport operators believe improved roads have positively affected their businesses.

“When roads are good, transportation becomes easier and cheaper,” said market trader Ngozi Ndukwe. “Customers come more often because movement is no longer difficult.”

Another area attracting attention is education. The Otti administration has repeatedly emphasized the importance of rebuilding public education. Several schools have received renovations, while efforts have been made to improve learning environments for students.

Classroom blocks that had deteriorated over the years are being rehabilitated. School facilities are being upgraded, while teachers and education stakeholders have continued to receive support through various interventions.

Parents say the improvements have renewed confidence in public education. “For a long time, many parents preferred private schools because public schools were neglected,” said Mrs. Blessing Onuoha, a mother of three. “What we are seeing now gives people hope that government schools can become competitive again.”

Healthcare is another sector where residents say changes are becoming noticeable.

Several health facilities across the state have been renovated and equipped. Government officials have repeatedly stated that access to quality healthcare is a key priority.

Residents in communities benefiting from upgraded healthcare facilities say the improvements are helping to reduce the burden of seeking treatment outside their localities.

“Healthcare should be close to the people,” said Elder Emmanuel Nwankwo from Umuahia. “The upgrades in some hospitals are encouraging. It shows government is paying attention.”

One of the governor’s major objectives has been the revival of Aba as a commercial and industrial powerhouse.

Known for its vibrant entrepreneurial culture, Aba has long been regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading manufacturing and trading centres. However, years of infrastructure challenges had slowed economic growth.

The administration’s efforts to improve roads, drainage systems and public infrastructure have been welcomed by many business owners who believe the city is gradually regaining its status.

“If Aba works, Abia works,” said trader Kingsley Eze. “That is why many people are happy with what is happening.”

Market modernization projects have also become an important part of the state’s development agenda.

The government has initiated efforts aimed at creating cleaner, safer and more organized trading environments. Several market facilities have received upgrades, while plans for modern market structures continue to attract public attention.

Traders believe these projects will improve business activities and attract more investors.

“When markets become modern, everybody benefits,” said market leader Mrs. Nkiruka Emeh. “Customers feel comfortable, traders make more sales and the environment becomes healthier.”

Environmental sanitation and urban renewal initiatives have also become visible across parts of the state.

Many roads and public spaces that were previously littered with refuse are now cleaner. Drainage channels have been cleared in several areas, helping to reduce flooding during heavy rainfall.

Residents say these improvements have changed the appearance of major cities.

“Umuahia is looking different today,” said civil servant Chukwuemeka Nwosu. “There is a noticeable improvement in cleanliness and organization.”

The administration has also focused on security and governance reforms.

Residents and community leaders say improved coordination among security agencies has contributed to a safer environment for businesses and residents.

Many believe that security improvements are critical to sustaining economic growth and attracting investment into the state.

The governor’s efforts have not gone unnoticed among young people. Across social media platforms and public discussions, many youths frequently highlight ongoing projects and development initiatives. Some describe Otti as one of the most active governors in Nigeria today.

“He has given young people something to believe in,” said student Chisom Ibe. “People now discuss development projects instead of abandoned promises.”

Political observers say one of the strongest assets of the governor is the growing perception among many residents that projects are visible and measurable.

Unlike campaign promises that often remain on paper, many citizens point to completed roads, upgraded facilities and ongoing projects as evidence of progress.

This perception has strengthened public support in many communities.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Otti’s popularity is the growing belief among supporters that he may not need an aggressive campaign to secure another term if elections were held today.

While politics remains unpredictable and opposition parties continue to strategize for future contests, many residents insist that visible projects have become the governor’s strongest campaign tool.

“His projects are speaking for him,” said businessman Ikechukwu Opara. “People can see what has changed with their own eyes.”

Another resident, Mrs. Adaobi Nwogu, shared a similar view. “If elections are held today, many people already know who they want to vote for. The roads, schools and infrastructure projects are there for everyone to see,” she said. Supporters argue that development projects have created a connection between the governor and ordinary citizens.

From reconstructed roads to modern traffic lights, upgraded schools, healthcare improvements, cleaner cities, market modernization and efforts to revive economic activities, many residents believe Abia is experiencing a period of renewal.

Of course, challenges remain. Like every state in Nigeria, Abia still faces issues requiring attention, including unemployment, industrial expansion, rural development and continued infrastructure growth.

However, many residents believe the current administration has laid a foundation that can support future progress.

As conversations continue across markets, motor parks, offices and communities, one message is frequently heard from supporters of the governor.

“We are seeing development,” said retired teacher Mrs. Eunice Nwankwo. “For many years people talked about change. Today, many of us believe we are actually seeing it happen.”

For these residents, the story of Alex Otti’s administration is not merely about politics. It is about visible projects, renewed hope and a belief that Abia State is gradually moving toward the future that many of its citizens have long desired.
