Mid-Year Budget Review: Government Allocates GH¢400 Million For New Buses To Boost Public Transport Fleet
The government has announced the allocation of GH¢400 million for the acquisition of high-capacity buses aimed at improving Ghana’s public transportation system.
The announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament.
According to the Finance Minister, the investment forms part of government’s broader efforts to provide citizens with safe, reliable, affordable and efficient public transport services.
Dr. Ato Forson explained that the funds will support the expansion and strengthening of the fleets of state-owned transport companies, including those responsible for providing mass transportation services across the country.
The move is expected to help address challenges facing public transportation, including inadequate buses, long waiting times and increasing pressure on existing vehicles due to growing passenger demand.
Many commuters, particularly in urban areas such as Accra, Kumasi and other major cities, have over the years complained about overcrowding and limited availability of reliable public transport options.
The Finance Minister said the government remains committed to improving the transport sector by investing in infrastructure and resources that will make movement easier and more affordable for Ghanaians.
The acquisition of additional high-capacity buses is also expected to support state transport operators in expanding their coverage and reducing the burden on private commercial transport services.
The announcement has generated discussions among Ghanaians, with some welcoming the move as a step towards modernising public transportation, while others have called for transparency in the procurement process to ensure value for money.
The GH¢400 million allocation forms part of government’s wider interventions outlined in the Mid-Year Budget Review to support economic growth and improve public services.
