NBA Birnin Kebbi Condemns Assault On Lawyer By Correctional Officer, Demands Prosecution

The Nigerian Bar Association, Birnin Kebbi Branch, known as the Equity Bar, has condemned what it described as an “unprovoked and unwarranted assault” on one of its members, Barrister Bilal Muhammad Ambursa, by a personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Secretary, Bashir Umar , the branch said the incident occurred on Friday, July 25, 2026, at about 11:45 AM at the New Correctional Centre in Birnin Kebbi.

“The NBA Birnin Kebbi Branch has received with deep shock, total dismay, and absolute outrage the report of an unprovoked and unwarranted assault on our esteemed colleague, Barr. Bilal Muhammad Ambursa of Shantali Law Chambers,” the statement said.

According to the association, Barr. Ambursa was at the facility on a legitimate visit to his client and was accompanied by the client’s relatives.

“Rather than facilitating this lawful visit, a trigger-happy and overzealous Armed Squad personnel of the Correctional Service decided to take the law into his own hands,” the NBA stated.

The association alleged that the officer assaulted the lawyer physically and verbally. “In a gross display of lawlessness and abuse of power, this officer brazenly disgraced our colleague by slapping him, physically intimidating him with a stick, and raining abusive words upon him. This barbaric act was deliberately orchestrated to humiliate Barr. Ambursa and tarnish his hard-earned reputation,” it said.

The Equity Bar described the attack as a threat to the legal profession and the rule of law.

. “This act is not merely unacceptable and condemnable; it is a direct, calculated attack on the legal profession, the administration of justice, and the rule of law itself. An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and an assault on a lawyer in the line of duty is an assault on the entire legal profession,” the statement read.

The NBA declared that it would not tolerate further attacks on its members. “We wish to state categorically that the NBA Birnin Kebbi Branch will not fold its arms and watch its members be treated with disdain or subjected to brute force by any security personnel,” it said.

The branch announced immediate steps to pursue the matter. “A special committee has been immediately constituted by the leadership of the Equity Bar to investigate this incident and pursue the matter strictly to its logical and legal conclusion,” the association stated.

It further assured solidarity with the victim and promised to ensure accountability. “We stand firmly and solidly with Barr. Bilal Muhammad Ambursa in this trying time. We assure all our members, and the general public, that no stone will be left unturned until the perpetrator of this heinous act is identified, disciplined, and held fully accountable under the law,” the statement added.

The NBA concluded with a warning to security agencies. “Injustice to one is indeed an injustice to all,” it said.
