The Nigerian government has disclosed plans to connect the National Identification Number, NIN, database with the National Postcode System.
As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Engr Abisoye Coker-Odusote, disclosed the plan on Thursday.
She stated that initiative aims to establish an integrated ecosystem where identity and location collaborate to enhance governance and facilitate citizens’ access to services.
“Identity alone is insufficient. For a digital ecosystem to operate effectively, a reliable identity must be paired with trustworthy location information,” she remarked.
Coker-Odusote elaborated that while the NIN identifies an individual, the postcode system determines where that individual can be reliably contacted.
She noted that with the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026 by President Bola Tinubu, the Commission is now the custodian of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure for identity and the Root Certification Authority for the National Public Key Infrastructure.
“This will expedite and simplify access for all Nigerians,” she added, emphasizing that this initiative will enhance planning, improve beneficiary targeting, and facilitate more effective policy implementation in sectors such as health, education, finance, logistics, and emergency services.
Coker-Odusote mentioned that this collaboration strengthens President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in relation to commitments to digital innovation, economic inclusion, and enhanced public service delivery.
