• How Rivers Politics Realigns For 2027

The political interregnum that disrupted democratic governance in Rivers State from October 2023 to July 2026 inflicted severe hardship on residents. Socio-economic activities ground to a near standstill despite the substantial Federation Account Allocations flowing from the state’s crude oil and gas resources under the national revenue-sharing formula.

Cracks in the relationship between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his political godfather, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, appeared within months of Fubara’s inauguration. Disagreements over the control of the state’s political machinery prompted the governor to establish the SIMPLIFIED MOVEMENT, a grassroots mobilisation structure comprising largely young, previously little-known politicians under 40. Among them was Hon. Chijioke Ihunwo, a former Rivers State youth leader of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, who later aligned with the Alliance for People’s Party (APP)who was later elected as Chairman of Obio/ Akpor Local Government Council which Supreme Court of Nigeria declared null and void. The movement rapidly established a presence across the 23 local government areas, unsettling Wike’s political network and contributing to significant defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. This occurred against the backdrop of a deepening national PDP crisis involving factional leadership disputes that pitted groups associated with Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde against Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s National Secretary.

Parallel factional struggles gripped the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State. Three main camps emerged: one led by Hon. Chief Emeka Beke, recognised by a court of competent jurisdiction; another headed by Chief Tony Okocha and recognised by the APC national secretariat; and a third associated with former Governor and Transportation Minister Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. Pastor Tonye Cole also maintained a distinct faction.

Under mounting political pressure, 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly aligned with Wike initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor. A Supreme Court ruling subsequently nullified the local government councils controlled by the SIMPLIFIED MOVEMENT-aligned APP. In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency on 18 March 2025, appointing retired Naval officer Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator for six months until 18 September 2025. During this period, the National Assembly assumed the legislative functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly and passed the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

Wike responded by consolidating his influence through the formation of the Rainbow Coalition Movement (RCM), operating under the broader Renewed Hope Ambassadors platform led by Ambassador Desmond Akawor. The coalition brought together four political parties: the APC faction led by Chief Tony Okocha, the Rivers State PDP faction associated with Aaron Chukwuemeka, the Labour Party, and the Action Alliance. It also incorporated the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), long associated with Wike and led by Bright Amaewhule, which had played a key role in mobilising support for Wike’s successful 2015 governorship bid and his subsequent eight-year tenure.

Wike presented the Rainbow Coalition as a vehicle to position Rivers State as a unified political bloc at the national level. The stated objective was to distribute political offices among Rivers indigenes irrespective of party affiliation, while prioritising support for President Tinubu’s administration and his re-election bid in 2027. He invited additional parties to join, emphasising the need to maintain peace and reduce the risk of violence, arson and other election-related vices that have historically plagued the state.

In late July 2026, Governor Fubara publicly announced that he and Wike had reconciled and that he had returned to the political family that nominated him as the PDP governorship candidate in 2022. He urged his followers to join the Rainbow Coalition. Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, currently serving as Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), was tasked with facilitating the integration of the Simplicity Movement into the coalition. Fubara declared support for President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election and endorsed the APC governorship candidate, Ogundu Kingsley Chinda (popularly known as O.K. Chinda), a member of the Federal House of Representatives. Abe’s brief includes defining the roles that the SIMPLIFIED MOVEMENT and Governor Fubara will play in the campaign structures aimed at delivering victory for both the presidential and governorship candidates.

Under the Rainbow Coalition, the various factional interest groups have been brought under the dominant influence of the FCT Minister, who now plays a central role in determining political appointments both within Rivers State and at the federal level.
