The Ohafia community in Abia State has kicked off a plan for construction of a cutting-edge recreation centre, conceived to adapt the state’s third biggest city to the 21st century urban settlement.
A 12-man Board for the Ohafia Recreation Centre (ORC), constituted by the Ohafia Improvement Union (OIU), has submitted the project’s design and masterplan, paving the way for the actualisation of the edifice.
The centre will occupy the existing Ohafia stadium ground and its environs and comprise a football pitch, a gallery, indoor sports hall, club section, mini-mart, pool area, lawn tennis court, hangout points and a spacious parking lot, among others.
In presenting the masterplan to the President-General of the OIU, Prince Kalu Ikpemini, the ORC Board led by Chief (Prof) Okwun Omeaku as Executive Chairman, said the ORC team promises to deliver to Ohafia “a project that will place her on the map of cities that will earn consideration for hosting of major sporting events in Abia State, and indeed in Nigeria.’’ “The hospitality industry will certainly expand in Ohafia just as trade and commerce will grow geometrically,’’ the ORC said in adjunct communication, according to a statement issued by Chief Emele Onu, the National Publicity Secretary of the OIU.
It will be recalled that the Prince Kalu Ikpemini-led OIU had shown immense zeal and commitment to leapfrog human and physical development of the Ohafia clan, since assuming office in December. The Union is taking a self-funding strategy from illustrious sons and daughters of Ohafia as well as support from external partners to execute the recreation project, just as being done for the Computer-Based Test centers it obtained government approval recently and are being deployed.
“We took up a responsibility to serve and to lead by example. We believe with the support of all Ohafia people, there’s nothing we want, we can’t achieve,” Ikpemini said, on receiving the masterplan.
Following the presentation of the design to herald the next phase, which is a survey of the recreation project site, the ORC has acquired a temporary office at Kayz Consortum Plaza in Elu Ohafia, culminating in a frenzy of activities for the organisation, the statement noted.
