Resident Caught On Camera Dumping Wheelbarrow of Refuse Into Gutter at Adenta Barely 24 Hours After Parts Of The City Were Engulfed By Floods

A resident at Adenta in the Greater Accra Region has been caught on camera deliberately wheeling a barrow-load of refuse to a gutter and pouring its contents directly into the drainage channel less than 24 hours after devastating floods submerged communities across Accra.

The footage shows the individual transporting the rubbish in a wheelbarrow to the gutter and emptying it directly into the drain despite a dustbin being visibly available in the same vicinity, making the decision to use the gutter entirely deliberate rather than a matter of convenience or lack of alternatives.

The act has drawn widespread condemnation online, particularly given its timing in the immediate aftermath of one of Accra’s worst flooding disasters in recent memory, which claimed lives, displaced residents, inundated the University of Ghana’s Mensah Sarbah Hall, and submerged major commercial hubs including Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

Existing sanitation bye-laws in Ghana criminalise the dumping of refuse into gutters, with offenders liable to fines and prosecution. Enforcement, however, has remained largely inconsistent.
