Osun Poll: Governor Adeleke Invites EU to Monitor Governorship Election

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has appealed to the European Union to closely monitor the forthcoming governorship election in the state, saying international observation would help strengthen transparency and adherence to electoral laws.
The governor made the appeal during a meeting with the Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Guschelbauer, at the Government House in Osogbo.
Adeleke said the presence of international observers would boost public confidence in the electoral process and encourage compliance with democratic standards during the election.
According to him, “I urge the European Union to take special interest in the forthcoming Osun State election.
“The observer intervention of the European Union will strengthen compliance with democratic practices and the Electoral Act for a free and fair poll.”
The governor stated that his administration remains committed to ensuring a peaceful and credible election. He added that the state government would continue to provide an enabling environment for all stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
Adeleke also used the opportunity to highlight investment opportunities in Osun State. He said the state possesses vast potential in key sectors including agriculture, renewable energy, mining, technology, education and vocational training.
He noted that his administration is open to partnerships that can drive economic growth and create opportunities for residents.
“We are ready to work with your country and Austrian businesses in exploring these opportunities for mutual growth and prosperity,” he said.
Speaking during the visit, the Austrian Ambassador said the European Union remains interested in promoting democratic values and supporting credible elections across democratic nations.
Guschelbauer expressed optimism that the Osun governorship election would be conducted in line with Nigeria’s electoral laws and democratic principles.
He noted that the poll would be closely watched because of its significance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The ambassador commended the Adeleke administration for its governance efforts and urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the election period.
He stressed the importance of respecting electoral rules and democratic processes to ensure political stability and sustainable development.
Guschelbauer also spoke on the longstanding cultural ties between Austria and Osun State, particularly through the globally recognised Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove.
He said Austria remains interested in supporting cultural preservation initiatives, tourism development and stronger economic cooperation between Austrian firms and businesses operating in Osun State.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled for August 15. A total of 14 political parties are expected to participate in the contest as voters prepare to elect the next governor of the state.
