The Peter Obi Media Office has dismissed what it described as coordinated attempts by political opponents to create division within the movement supporting the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, insisting that its focus remains on addressing Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic challenges rather than responding to misinformation.
In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja, by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri, the media office alleged that political adversaries were spreading false narratives and attributing imaginary statements to Obi in a bid to create disunity among his supporters.
According to the statement, the campaign to discredit Obi is intended to distract attention from the movement’s commitment to national development and good governance.
“Our focus is on substantive issues, not on misinformation or diversions,” the statement declared.
The media office maintained that Peter Obi’s political vision has always been centred on national progress, ethical leadership and economic transformation, rather than personal ambition, ethnic politics or partisan disputes.
It argued that while political opponents concentrate on spreading falsehoods, millions of Nigerians continue to face severe economic hardship, rising inflation, unemployment and worsening insecurity.
“Millions of households are grappling with escalating living expenses, rampant inflation and widespread unemployment. A significant number of our citizens live in constant fear for their safety and their ability to earn a living across the nation,” the statement noted.
It added that Nigeria’s public institutions require capable, accountable and ethical leadership capable of delivering essential services and restoring public confidence.
The media office said these are the issues that deserve national attention rather than what it described as politically motivated distractions.
It also urged critics of Obi to channel their energies into offering practical solutions to the country’s challenges instead of engaging in smear campaigns.
“To engage in the unproductive arena of political slander would be a disservice to the struggling populace who place their hope in our principal for viable solutions,” it stated.
The statement further appealed to supporters of the Obidient Movement, the Kwankwasoiyya movement and other Nigerians to ignore what it described as fabricated reports, including claims that the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, had been removed from office.
It described such reports as deliberate attempts to create confusion and weaken the movement.
“We implore our devoted supporters, including the OBIdients and Kwankwasoiyya movements, and all Nigerians of good conscience, to disregard rumours, fabricated stories and deliberate provocations, including the purported sack of the Obidient Movement National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko,” the statement said.
Reaffirming the movement’s commitment to national transformation, the media office said Peter Obi remains focused on building a productive economy, strengthening institutions and promoting a Nigeria that is prosperous, secure and works for all citizens.
It insisted that no amount of misinformation or coordinated attacks would derail what it described as a movement founded on truth, competence and a genuine desire to restore the country.
