Police Families Get Economic Lifeline As Trust Fund Rolls Out Empowerment Scheme Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) on Monday unveiled a nationwide skills acquisition and empowerment programme for spouses of junior police officers, marking a fresh effort to improve the welfare of police families and strengthen the support system behind frontline law enforcement personnel.

The initiative, launched in partnership with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), is expected to benefit more than 2,000 spouses of junior police officers across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory through vocational training and the distribution of business start-up kits.

The programme was inaugurated at the M.D. Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja, where stakeholders described the intervention as an important complement to ongoing investments in police infrastructure, training and operational capacity.

The latest intervention comes amid increasing calls for a broader approach to police welfare that extends beyond operational equipment and training to include the economic wellbeing of officers and their families. Analysts have long argued that stable family support and improved welfare contribute significantly to the morale, productivity and effectiveness of security personnel.

Speaking during the launch, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, said the programme was conceived to address the economic realities confronting many police households while reinforcing the Fund’s wider mandate of supporting the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, the Trust Fund recognises that while police officers shoulder the responsibility of safeguarding lives and property under demanding conditions, their spouses also make significant sacrifices in supporting their families and the officers’ professional responsibilities.

“Today, as we present these start-up packs, we are not merely distributing equipment. We are investing in opportunities promoting self-reliance and creating pathways for lasting economic independence,” Sheidu said.

He urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the vocational training and business starter packs by establishing sustainable enterprises capable of improving family incomes and creating positive economic impact within their communities.

Sheidu further reaffirmed the Trust Fund’s commitment to implementing initiatives that improve the welfare of police personnel and their families through sustained collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Officers’ Wives Association.

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the empowerment initiative as a strategic investment in the future of police families, noting that the effectiveness of policing is closely linked to the stability and wellbeing of officers’ homes.

“Today, we are not merely distributing empowerment items or providing economic opportunities; we are making a meaningful investment in the stability, resilience and wellbeing of police families,” the IGP said.

He encouraged beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity by deploying the acquired skills and start-up resources to build viable businesses capable of providing long-term financial security for their households.

The Inspector-General also commended the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for introducing the programme, describing it as evidence of a growing recognition that improving family welfare contributes to building a more motivated and efficient Police Force.

National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, also hailed the initiative, describing it as a significant intervention that goes beyond vocational training by creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods and renewed hope among police families.

She noted that empowering the spouses of police officers represents a practical investment in the welfare architecture of the Nigeria Police Force, adding that stronger families are essential to sustaining officers’ morale, professionalism and operational effectiveness.

Representing the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, government officials also welcomed the initiative, saying it would promote self-reliance among beneficiaries while contributing to improved family stability and supporting the overall effectiveness of policing.

The representative urged participants to take full advantage of the training and business support provided under the scheme to improve their livelihoods and maximise the opportunities created by the programme.

The empowerment programme adds a new dimension to ongoing efforts to improve welfare within the Nigeria Police Force by focusing on the economic resilience of officers’ families.

With vocational training and start-up support forming the core of the initiative, stakeholders expressed optimism that the intervention would help create additional sources of income for police households while reinforcing the broader objective of building a more motivated and resilient police institution.
