The Arab League has said Israel must not be allowed to achieve its objective of expanding its occupation of the Gaza Strip, warning against attempts to derail efforts to move to the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.
The remarks came in a statement by Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy in response to the escalation of Israeli attacks on Gaza, which the statement said killed 19 Palestinians over the past 24 hours.
Fahmy condemned in “the strongest terms” what he described as “brutal” attacks on the Gaza Strip, saying they targeted tents sheltering displaced people and residential flats, leaving dozens of people killed and injured.
The Arab League chief said the Israeli bombardment of Gaza was taking place alongside a large-scale military campaign in the occupied West Bank, including home demolitions and arrest raids in several cities.
He described the developments as “a clear Israeli attempt” to undermine the roadmap announced two days earlier as the basis for moving to the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, ending the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and securing an Israeli withdrawal.
