President Bola Tinubu has explained that his approval of the recent reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was aimed at equipping young Nigerians with practical skills and preparing them to contribute more meaningfully to national development.
Naijaonpoint reports that Tinubu stated this in a post on his verified š handle on Wednesday, following the approval of the reforms by the Federal Executive Council on Monday.
The President described the changes as the most significant reforms of the NYSC scheme since it was established in 1973.
Tinubu said the reforms were part of his administrationās commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for young Nigerians.
He said, āOn Monday, at the Federal Executive Council, our administration approved the most consequential reforms of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme since its establishment in 1973.
āOn the day I was sworn in as your President, I promised to create meaningful opportunities for our young people. I said women and youth would feature prominently in our administration, and this reform is partly the actualisation of that promise.ā
The President noted that the scheme had played a major role in promoting national unity for more than five decades.
He, however, said Nigeriaās present realities required the NYSC to go beyond its traditional mandate and respond to the needs of young people in a changing economy.
āFor 53 years, the NYSC has served the cause of national unity. That mission remains important and must be preserved. But the Nigeria of today demands more,ā Tinubu added.
According to him, the reforms are expected to reposition the scheme to better serve corps members and the country by placing greater emphasis on practical skills, productivity and national development.
