Tinubu Reaffirms Nigeria’s Road Safety Drive At UN Meeting, Seeks Stronger Global Cooperation

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to reducing road traffic deaths and injuries, with the Federal Government calling for stronger international cooperation to accelerate global road safety efforts.

According to a statement signed by Osondu Ohaeri, Deputy Corps Commander, Corps Public Education Officer, the President, represented by the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, delivered Nigeria’s national statement at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety holding at the UN General Assembly Headquarters in New York.

The meeting, themed “Scaling Up and Accelerating Implementation of Commitments to Halving Road Traffic Deaths and Injuries by 2030,” brings together world leaders, ministers, policymakers and road safety experts to review progress towards the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety target of reducing road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 50 per cent before 2030.

Presenting Nigeria’s position on behalf of President Tinubu, Mohammed said the Federal Government remained committed to strengthening road safety governance through sustained political support, strategic investments, innovation and enhanced international partnerships in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said Nigeria had continued to strengthen the institutional capacity of the FRSC through strategic reforms, deployment of technology-driven enforcement systems, improved emergency response mechanisms and expanded public enlightenment campaigns aimed at reducing road crashes and fatalities.

The Corps Marshal also highlighted Nigeria’s growing role in advancing road safety across Africa, noting that the country recently launched the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) in partnership with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to improve road infrastructure safety using the globally recognised Safe System Approach.

He added that Nigeria continues to host the Secretariat of the African Association of Road Safety Lead Agencies (AARSLA), providing a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing and institutional development among road safety agencies on the continent.

Mohammed further told delegates that the country is aligning its transport sector with global sustainability goals through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles while developing safety standards for heavy-duty vehicles and emerging transport technologies.

While acknowledging the progress made, he stressed that greater international cooperation remained necessary in areas such as intelligent enforcement technologies, road infrastructure safety assessments, institutional capacity development and technology transfer.

He urged development partners and the international community to deepen technical cooperation and support capacity-building initiatives to help countries achieve the global road safety targets.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment, the FRSC Corps Marshal said road safety remained a national priority under the Tinubu administration, adding that the country would continue working with international partners to build safer roads, save lives and contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The United Nations High-Level Meeting, convened by the President of the UN General Assembly in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), is expected to adopt a Progress Declaration to guide global efforts towards achieving the target of halving road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

The meeting is also reviewing progress made by member states since the adoption of the 2022 Political Declaration on Road Safety and the Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in Marrakech, Morocco, in 2025.
