The United Kingdom(uk) government has created a new office aimed at providing stronger support for British citizens who are detained overseas, especially those facing complex legal, welfare or human rights challenges.
The government announced on Tuesday the appointment of former Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt as the UK’s first Envoy for Complex Consular Detentions.

The new role was established to strengthen assistance for British nationals involved in difficult overseas detention cases, including situations where there are concerns about fair treatment, legal processes or personal welfare.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said the envoy would help ensure that complicated cases receive greater attention and that all possible steps are taken to support affected individuals and their families.
Burt was selected for the role because of his previous experience managing sensitive diplomatic matters, working in high-pressure situations and engaging with foreign governments, detainees and families seeking assistance.
As envoy, he will represent the interests of British nationals detained abroad while working closely with their relatives to ensure their concerns are considered in government decisions.
His responsibilities will include improving coordination across government departments, supporting efforts to resolve difficult cases and exploring available diplomatic and legal options to secure positive outcomes.
The appointment comes as governments around the world continue to deal with complex cases involving citizens detained outside their home countries, often requiring cooperation between diplomatic channels, foreign authorities and legal representatives.
Beyond handling detention cases, the new envoy will support wider consular services provided by the FCDO, including issuing emergency travel documents, offering guidance to British nationals arrested overseas and providing updated travel information.
Speaking about his appointment, Burt said his previous experience understanding the impact of complex cases on families would help him work towards achieving the best possible outcomes for those affected.
He added that supporting citizens in difficult circumstances and ensuring their families have a voice would be central to his new role.
The UK government said the creation of the envoy position reflects its commitment to improving support for citizens abroad and ensuring that those facing serious challenges overseas receive appropriate assistance.
Through the new office, authorities hope to provide a more coordinated approach to complex detention cases while strengthening engagement with families and international partners.
