Travellers planning to pass through the United Kingdom (UK) on their way to another country have been advised to check whether they need a transit visa before travelling.
According to guidance issued by the UK government, some foreign nationals are required to obtain a transit visa even if they do not intend to stay in the country. The type of visa required depends on whether the traveller will pass through UK border control during their stopover.

The UK operates two main types of transit visas. Passengers who are simply changing flights without going through border control must apply for a Direct Airside Transit Visa.
However, travellers who need to pass through border control but plan to leave the UK within 48 hours are required to obtain a Visitor in Transit Visa.
For those intending to remain in the UK for more than 48 hours, or who expect to transit through the country regularly over a period longer than six months, a Standard Visitor Visa is required instead of either transit visa.
The government advises travellers to confirm with their airline whether their journey requires them to pass through border control, as this determines the type of visa needed.
Not every traveller is required to obtain a transit visa. The UK government has listed several categories of people who are exempt from the requirement. These include individuals holding an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), people with an EU Settlement Scheme Family Permit, holders of Home Office travel documents issued to refugees or stateless persons, and travellers who already possess a valid Standard Visitor Visa or Marriage Visitor Visa.
The guidance also notes that travellers with an ETA do not need to apply separately for a Standard Visitor Visa if they require a longer stay while transiting through the UK, making the document particularly useful for frequent travellers.
The updated guidance is aimed at helping passengers avoid travel disruptions caused by visa-related issues before departure. Travellers are encouraged to review the latest entry and transit requirements before booking flights or beginning their journey to ensure they meet all immigration conditions.
Government says passengers can check their visa requirements and determine the appropriate transit permission based on their nationality and travel plans before making their trip.
