The Students’ Union Government of the University of Jos has called for an end to jungle justice after the death of one of its students, Ibrahim Mbaye, who was allegedly beaten by a mob over claims that he stole an iPhone.
The union issued the appeal on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, after confirming that the student died following the attack.
It urged students to reject mob violence, allow the police to handle criminal cases and protect the rule of law within the university community.

The appeal places attention on the danger of people taking the law into their own hands instead of allowing security agencies to investigate criminal allegations.
The union’s message also follows reports that suspects linked to the assault have already been taken into police custody, with investigations under way.
Union condemns jungle justice
In its official press release, the Students’ Union Government said Ibrahim Mbaye was allegedly accused of stealing mobile phones before he was attacked by some persons.
He suffered injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. The union revealed that he later died in the early hours of the day.
UniJos SUG centred its message on preventing similar tragedies. It condemned jungle justice without reservation and warned that no accusation should lead people to punish a suspect outside the law.
It said, “No allegation, regardless of its nature, justifies taking the law into one’s own hands.”
The union stressed that every person deserves fair treatment and due process. It warned that mob violence weakens justice and also threatens the safety of students and the values of the university community.
The union’s position maintained a legal principle that criminal allegations should be handled through lawful investigation and prosecution instead of public attacks.
The union disclosed that those allegedly involved in the assault have been arrested and taken into police custody.
It also urged that justice should take its full course under the law.
At the same time, the union appealed to students not to spread unverified information while the investigation continues, warning against any form of retaliation.
The student body advised that whenever any student is suspected of committing an offence, the matter should be reported immediately to university authorities or law enforcement agencies instead of being handled by individuals.
The union also expressed sympathy to the family, friends and loved ones of Ibrahim Mbaye.
