A Nigerian woman’s account of a terrifying encounter that she said ended her engagement with a suspected online scammer known as a “Yahoo boy” has gone viral.
In a social media video, the woman described how, following indications that EFCC agents were making arrests nearby, she allegedly ended up hiding within a graveyard in the middle of the night.
She explained that she had gone to visit her then-boyfriend at his hostel when someone suddenly knocked on the door, warning that EFCC operatives were arresting suspected Yahoo boys.
Nearby, recounting that his friend had received a call from a nearby hotel alerting them that operatives were in the area and arresting suspects, prompting them to leave in a hurry.
She said her boyfriend woke her up abruptly and insisted they leave immediately, without allowing her to pick up her phone, despite her protest that her parents might try to reach her if things went wrong.
She explained that they escaped by jumping over a high fence into a neighbouring compound, only to discover to her shock that they had landed inside a cemetery, which her boyfriend told her was a Muslim burial ground.
She said this revelation left her in tears, noting that it was not the fear of the EFCC that upset her most, but the shock of finding herself in the midst of graves at around 2 a.m., adding that her mother knows she has always been uncomfortable being near corpses.
She said they later hid under a tree inside the cemetery before moving between locations after spotting a vigilante group, eventually trekking from Offa to Ajase in Kwara State before daybreak, after which she boarded a bus back to Ibadan.
Although her boyfriend later apologised for the incident, she said the experience left her deeply traumatised and unable to sleep once she got home, adding that it ultimately led to their breakup despite his repeated apologies and pleas for forgiveness.
Her story has since sparked reactions online, with social media users sharing mixed opinions about her experience.
