Two residents were trapped under the rubble on Friday after part of a one-storey residential building collapsed in Kubwa, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The victims, who occupied a ground-floor apartment, were eventually rescued and taken to the Kubwa General Hospital, where they were said to be in stable condition.
The building, located at toKubwa 2/2, around the Yellow Page axis, reportedly collapsed at about 11:30am, sending residents and neighbours into panic.
The Head of Public Affairs, FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, who confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists, said the agency received a distress call at about 11:38am.
According to her, the affected structure comprised six blocks of flats, while the right segment of the building gave way, trapping the two occupants inside their apartment.
“Other residents of the building were reported to have been out for the day. Household items were destroyed in the incident,” Isa said.
She added that the two rescued occupants had been evacuated to Kubwa General Hospital for medical attention and were in stable condition.
The Department of Development Control and the FCT Police Command were also said to have responded to the scene.
The latest collapse has again brought to the fore concerns over the enforcement of building regulations in the FCT, particularly the quality of construction materials, compliance with approved building plans and regular inspection of structures.
The recurrence of building collapses across the territory has raised questions about the effectiveness of monitoring mechanisms and alleged compromises in the regulatory process.
Residents and stakeholders have continued to demand more stringent supervision of construction projects, particularly in densely populated areas, to prevent avoidable deaths and destruction of property.
The Kubwa incident is coming barely months after similar building collapses were recorded in other parts of the FCT.
On May 16–17, 2026, a three-storey building under construction near Gudu Market in Garki District collapsed, killing five people and injuring several others.
Several victims were reportedly trapped under the rubble before rescue operations were carried out.
Earlier, on April 3, 2026, a two-storey hotel building under construction in Jikwoyi, another satellite town of the FCT, collapsed, injuring several workers.
Residents had alleged that the rush to complete the project may have contributed to the incident, although the claim was subject to investigation by relevant authorities.
With the latest collapse in Kubwa, concerns are mounting over the need for authorities to intensify inspections of both completed and ongoing structures across the FCT.
Stakeholders insist that stronger enforcement of building codes, proper certification of construction materials and prompt sanctions for violations are necessary to stem the growing incidents of structural failures and safeguard lives and property in the nation’s capital.
