Accra: Watch Moment Ghana Police Exchanged Bullets With Armed Robbers Like War Film In Broad Daylight
The Ghana Police Service has foiled a planned robbery operation targeting three banks, GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank, all located at Labone, Accra, killing two suspects and arresting a third believed to be linked to the gang.
The Police say they received intelligence at about 10:45am on August 13, 2026, that a gang was preparing to attack the three banks, prompting the deployment of a response team to the area, where the suspects were spotted parked close to the banks in two vehicles.
Upon sighting the police, one vehicle reportedly sped off in an attempt to escape, leading to a chase that ended in the arrest of Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while another occupant managed to escape on foot.
Occupants of the second vehicle allegedly opened fire on responding officers while attempting to break through the security cordon. Police returned fire, fatally wounding two of the suspects.
A pistol and two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander (GS-1434-18) and a Hyundai Tucson (GS 7915-17), were reportedly recovered from the scene.
Maazi remains in police custody assisting with investigations, while the bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for identification and autopsy.
A manhunt is underway for the accomplice who escaped.
However, GCB Bank has disputed the police’s initial account, stating that no robbery or attempted robbery took place at its Labone branch, and that the branch was never breached, with no customers, staff, funds, or property affected.
The police have since clarified that the operation targeted a syndicate planning to hit all three banks in the area, rather than an active raid on any single branch.
