Armed Forces Salary Review: NSC President Commends Tinubu, Calls For Holistic Salary Review Across Security Agencies

Renowned Criminologist and President of Nigeria Society for Criminology (NSC), Professor Oludayo Tade, on Thursday commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the upward review of the salaries of the Nigerian Armed Forces describing the move as a morale booster in the fight against insecurity in Nigeria.

In a release signed by him, Professor Tade appreciated the role that the Armed Forces have been playing in keeping Nigeria and Nigerians safe and in some circumstances have paid the supreme price, adding that they deserve the upward salary review was better late than never.

Effective from September 1, the salaries of armed forces personnel have been jacked up by 30percent for officers above the rank of colonel, Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, 50percent for personnel ranking from colonel down to warrant officer while those from private to staff sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase.

The NSC president however urged the president not to delay the upward review of the salaries of other security agencies, nothing that in the era of fighting multiple threats of banditry, terrorism, kidnaping and mass abduction, holistic upward of salaries for those in other security agencies are equally vital and important.

“The security architecture is a system. You cannot encourage a unit of the system and expect others to be happy. I appeal to the president Tinubu to do an upward review of salaries for the Police and other paramilitary sister agencies to enhance cooperation, and collaboration and not deepen interagency rivalry. Incentives should be inclusive and make everyone in the system feel important”

According to him, for us to encourage seamless interagency collaboration and not deepen interagency rivalry, “it is important that the president attends to upwardly review salaries of other security agencies that make up the security architecture of Nigeria”.

Professor Tade who noted that the recent successes being recorded in the fight against insecurity involves multi-agency task forces added that “it is not good enough for some agencies to see themselves being treated as inferior to others”

“We need to encourage our security agencies not only in salaries, but also training, equipment purchases and other welfare issues. Many of the children of fallen heroes are suffering and their families need urgent attention. They need the political will to perform on their duties and deliver. The president may also find a way of recognizing exemplary officers and incentivizing them for their roles in keeping Nigeria secured”.
