Bunu, MWUN PG Makes Landslide Mark As Employer Settles Late Okwuwa

LAGOS – The President -General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi has made another milestone achievement over the death of Comrade Okwuwa Chinedu Godwin, a member of the Union, and an employee of GMS Recruitment Services Limited; who died on March 18, 2024, as a result of an illness contracted while on board a vessel.

Head of Media, MWUN who disclosed this in a statement said that it would be recalled that the sad incident of late Comrade Godwin occurred in 2024, prior to the emergence of Bunu, the present President -General of the Union, who took up the issue with so much vigour, resilience, determination and with sense of purpose in dealing with the matter in consonance with the Labour laws to achieving this expected result at the end.

He said: The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria as it’s today under the new leadership of the pragmatic PG, cannot be said to be inadequate, given the case of the late Comrade Godwin, whose cause of death wasn’t farfetched from the vessel he was detailed by his employers.

“This is also noting from all fairness that after MWUN’s intervention and negotiations with his employers, GMS Recruitment Services adhered to the demands of the Union in favour of the late Comrade Godwin accordingly as per P& I.”

Comrade Ikemefuna noted that in view of the aforesaid, Comrade Bunu, thanked the management of GMS Recruitment Services for their understanding of the whole matter and their maximum cooperation in this regard, noting that human lives matter when it comes to death in anyway it may have occurred.

He said the family of the late Godwin also shared in the same vein with the MWUN PG on how the whole issue was handled towards a reasonable and amicable conclusion, with so much thanks to the leadership of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria.
