Chelsea face a frantic scramble to trim their bloated squad, with just 25 days left in the summer transfer window to move on 16 players.
The Blues currently carry 41 senior professionals, and new head coach Xabi Alonso wants that number cut to around 25 before his first full season at Stamford Bridge begins.
The Spaniard inherits a squad reshaping job that stretches well beyond the training pitch, forcing Chelsea’s recruitment team to work at pace to secure exits before the deadline.
Chelsea have already moved several players on, with Alejandro Garnacho, Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella and Tyrique George departing, while Filip Jorgensen and Trevoh Chalobah head to Strasbourg and Como respectively.

Yet dozens more remain without a clear path into Alonso’s plans. Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Caleb Wiley, David Datro Fofana and Marc Guiu have all been left out of pre-season training entirely.
Complicating matters further, Chelsea can no longer fall back on the tactics they once used to push out unwanted players. FIFA has banned so-called “bomb squads,” the practice of isolating fringe players from first-team training to pressure moves along. Chelsea previously sidelined the likes of Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi in this manner but that route is now closed.
Under the new rules agreed between FIFA and FIFPRO, deliberately ostracising or demoting players to force them out is treated as a breach of contract and sidelined players who feel unfairly treated can now terminate their deals unilaterally and walk away on free transfers.
The stakes extend beyond squad harmony. At centre-back alone, Alonso has said his nine-man group needs trimming to four or five, with Disasi and Badiashile up for sale and Mamadou Sarr expected out on loan.
Chelsea have reportedly slapped a £75million valuation on Malo Gusto amid interest from Manchester City, while Enzo Fernandez is valued at £120million despite the club’s willingness to keep him.
Elsewhere, Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap’s futures remain unresolved, as Chelsea hope to retain three senior strikers alongside new signing Danny Welbeck and Emmanuel Emegha.
The oversized squad is not a new problem. Chelsea’s stockpiling strategy dates back over a decade to the Roman Abramovich era, when the club once had as many as 42 players out on loan simultaneously before FIFA introduced loan limits to curb the practice.
With Chelsea absent from European competition this season, Alonso avoids the registration headaches that hampered the club during their 2024-25 Conference League campaign but the pressure to build a leaner, more competitive squad remains just as urgent.
