Chelsea Sign Argentina Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez On 3-Year Deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina international goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa on a three-year contract.

The 33-year-old joins the Blues after spending six seasons at Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers.

Martinez, a member of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, said he was delighted to join Chelsea and believes the move aligns with his ambitions.

“I’m delighted to be at this football club,” Martinez said. “Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon – I can’t wait to get started.”

The goalkeeper said he was determined to win trophies with Chelsea and contribute to the club’s success.

“I want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club because it’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match,” he added.

Martinez also pledged to give his best for his new teammates and supporters.

“I’m all passion and I play with my heart. I will give 100 per cent every game, every training session to make the club, my teammates and the supporters proud,” he said.

Martinez began his football career in Independiente’s youth system before joining Arsenal in August 2010 at the age of 17.

After several loan spells, he became Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper towards the end of the 2019/20 season, starting their final 11 matches and helping the club win the FA Cup.

He also won the Community Shield with Arsenal before joining Aston Villa in September 2020.

During his six-year spell at Villa, Martinez made 256 appearances and helped the club win the UEFA Europa League in May.

At international level, Martinez made his Argentina debut in June 2021 and has since become the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. He has won two Copa América titles, in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His performances have also earned him the Yashin Trophy for the world’s best-performing goalkeeper at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremonies.

Martinez now begins a new chapter at Chelsea as the club’s latest signing ahead of the new season.
