In a commendable initiative to enhance healthcare services in the Surulere community, a young National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ige Tolulope Adenike, NYSC/UB/2025/231713 has undertaken a significant rehabilitation project at the Camp Health Center, located in the Odeda Local Government Area of Abeokuta.
After being alerted to the challenges faced by mothers seeking essential healthcare services in the area, Tolulope was inspired to act when she learned of the concerns from local residents. The health center, serving as a vital facility for healthcare needs, especially vaccinations for infants, had been facing multiple issues related to water supply and hygiene.
During her initial visit to the health center, Tolulope met with the Matron, Mrs. Oladele, who outlined a lengthy list of needs for the facility. Recognizing the critical role that a reliable water supply plays in a healthcare setting, Tolulope focused her efforts on rehabilitating the water circulatory system of the health center. This intervention not only aimed to improve the conditions within the facility but also sought to benefit the wider community.
Community representatives have expressed their gratitude for this timely upgrade. Women from Surulere and neighboring communities who previously relied on the health center’s well for water are now relieved of the burden of drawing water. “With the improvements made by Corper Ige Tolulope, fetching water is no longer a strenuous task for us,” said one local representative. “We have been praying for her and are thankful for her efforts.”
Since the water system’s rehabilitation, healthcare workers have reported a significant reduction in their workload, allowing them to focus more on patient care rather than water logistics. The upgraded system provides a safer, more reliable source of water for both the health center and the broader community, marking a notable enhancement in healthcare provision in the area.
Tolulope’s intervention reflects the positive impact that young individuals can have on local communities when given the platform and support to create change.
