The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has donated 32-seater coaster bus to his alma mater, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife.
The gift he said was part of his abiding commitment to the growth and development of the institution.
A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that the donation, which is aimed at further strengthening the University’s transportation system, comes on the heels of the landmark intervention of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, who recently donated 50 buses to the University to improve intra-campus transportation.
According to the University’s spokesperson “This latest gesture is another milestone in the Comptroller-General’s sustained support for the University. In 2025, he donated a fully equipped ambulance to the institution to enhance healthcare delivery and emergency response services, an intervention that has continued to benefit members of the University community.”
Receiving the bus on behalf of the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed profound appreciation to the Comptroller-General, describing him as an outstanding ambassador of the University whose generosity and unwavering commitment to his Alma Mater deserve the highest commendation.
Professor Bamire said the donation was not only timely but also symbolic of the strong bond between the University and its distinguished alumni.
“This generous donation is another eloquent demonstration of Comptroller-General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi’s enduring love for Obafemi Awolowo University. It reflects his deep appreciation of the role the University has played in shaping his career and his determination to give back meaningfully to the institution that moulded him.”
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the additional bus would significantly improve the University’s transportation network, reduce mobility challenges and enhance the day-to-day movement of students, staff and visitors across the sprawling campus.
He observed that the intervention perfectly complements the earlier donation of 50 buses by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, whose support has substantially transformed transportation within the University.
According to Professor Bamire, “The combined interventions of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi have further strengthened our capacity to provide a more efficient, safer and convenient transportation system for members of our University community.
On his part, the global President of the Great Ife Alumni Association, Dr. Leye Falode, said that the entire alumni remain profoundly grateful for these remarkable acts of generosity.
He also commended the Comptroller-General for consistently identifying with the aspirations and developmental needs of the University, describing him as a worthy role model whose life exemplifies excellence, patriotism, integrity and selfless service.
He urged other alumni of the University, corporate organisations and public-spirited Nigerians to emulate the exemplary philanthropy of the Customs boss by partnering with the University in advancing academic excellence, research, innovation and infrastructural development.
Reacting to the donation, the Pro – Chancellor and Chairman of the Council of the University, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Adejare Bello, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to the judicious utilisation and proper maintenance of the donated vehicle, assuring the donor that the bus would be deployed to serve the purpose for which it was given.
He added that Obafemi Awolowo University will continue to cherish the invaluable contributions of its illustrious alumni and strategic partners whose unwavering support has remained instrumental to the institution’s pursuit of excellence and its position as one of Africa’s foremost universities.
