Don’t Stigmatise Your Opponents — Tinubu Tells Adeleke After Election Victory

President Bola Tinubu has urged Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to embrace an all-inclusive approach to governance and avoid stigmatising or victimising his political opponents following his victory in the recent governorship election.

Tinubu gave the advice on Thursday when Adeleke visited him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, stressing that the governor’s victory should not be seen as a conquest over his opponents but as the outcome of the people’s decision through the democratic process.

The President urged Adeleke to use his second term to promote unity, peace and stability in Osun State, while ensuring that his administration accommodates people across political divides.

“Do not stigmatise any of your opponents. The people of Osun State have delivered their judgment in your favour, indicating their desire for you to lead. Therefore, you are returning to govern,” Tinubu told the governor.

He said anyone who could not celebrate a free and fair election did not deserve the joy and laughter that democracy brings.

“Any individual, any democrat, anyone within the political sphere who cannot rejoice in the triumph of a free and fair election does not deserve the joy and laughter that democracy offers.

“Do not make a single person a victim of your campaign. Avoid this, not just for your own sake, but for the sake of Osun and future generations. It is crucial for you to foster a network of unity.

“As I mentioned, you did not conquer anyone. You won an election. This is the essence of democracy. I am pleased that we had this discussion,” the President said.

Tinubu further advised Adeleke to demonstrate his appreciation to the people of Osun not only through celebrations and words but through his actions in office.

According to him, the governor has a responsibility to broaden his approach to governance and ensure that his victory translates into greater development and unity for the state.

The President said his own emergence as Nigeria’s leader was also a product of divine providence and the support of the people, stressing that Adeleke should similarly recognise that his victory was not solely the result of individual efforts.

“Use me as an example. I arrived here by divine providence. God placed me in this position. Similarly, God has placed you where you are today, not due to the cleverness of any individual.

“It is solely the support of the people, not their cleverness.

“It is the will of God that has prevailed, along with the wishes of the people for you,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu also commended Adeleke’s campaign, saying the governor demonstrated what he described as a progressive instinct and effectively mobilised support throughout the electioneering period.

“What you are currently doing reflects a progressive instinct. You have effectively mobilised with your efforts,” the President added.
