The Government Secondary School (GSS) Kwali Alumni Association has marked the 44th anniversary of its alma mater with the election of its first democratically elected National Executive Council, a landmark development expected to strengthen alumni engagement, deepen unity among old students and mobilise support for the continued growth and development of the institution.
The historic election, held as part of activities commemorating the school’s four decades of academic excellence and impact, saw Surveyor Abayomi Kayode Otitoju elected as National President, while Ike-Onuigbo Chinyere Gift emerged as National Vice President and legal practitioner Ekpo Samuel was elected National Secretary.
Other officers elected include Immaculate Unekwu Offor (Assistant National Secretary), Leonard James (National Treasurer), Aisha Mohammed Mundi (National Financial Secretary), Ibrahim Shekwoduza (National Organising Secretary) and Blessing Rufus (National Public Relations Officer).
The newly elected executives are expected to provide strategic leadership for the association by strengthening collaboration among alumni, expanding its membership network across Nigeria and the diaspora, mobilising resources for the development of the school and promoting initiatives that improve the academic and welfare needs of students.
The election represents the culmination of years of efforts to establish a unified national platform for former students of the institution, following decades in which alumni engagement was largely driven by individual graduating sets.
Established in 1981, Government Secondary School, Kwali, has built a reputation for academic excellence, producing graduates who have distinguished themselves in public service, business, law, banking, engineering, education and other professions within Nigeria and across the diaspora.
According to members of the association, the school’s 44-year history has been defined by the emergence of leaders, professionals and change-makers whose contributions have positively impacted their communities and the nation’s development.
They explained that as graduates became increasingly dispersed across different professions, states and countries, the need for a unified platform to reconnect old students and coordinate their contributions to the growth of the institution became imperative.
The association recalled that the journey towards establishing a national alumni body began with informal reunions organised by various graduating sets before discussions gathered momentum in December 2019 on the need to create an umbrella organisation for all former students of the school.
Those efforts culminated in the establishment of the Government Secondary School Kwali Old Students Association (GOSSKWOSA), with the emergence of the first democratically elected National Executive Council marking a significant milestone in the institutional development of the association.
Members said GOSSKWOSA was founded to reconnect graduates across different generations, irrespective of where they reside, while leveraging the collective experience, expertise and resources of its members to support the rebuilding and advancement of their alma mater.
They added that beyond fostering friendship and professional networking, the association intends to champion initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, promoting academic excellence, supporting student welfare and creating mentorship opportunities for the next generation of GSS Kwali students.
Members expressed confidence that the newly elected National Executive Council would usher in a new era of stronger coordination, greater inclusiveness and more active participation among alumni, while reinforcing the bond between former students and their alma mater.
They said the election marks the beginning of a new chapter for GOSSKWOSA as it pursues its vision to “Unite the past, empower the present, and build the future of GSS Kwali” through stronger alumni participation and sustained investment in the school’s future.
