Hayden Panettiere‘s death has left her former co-star Justin Chatwin grieving, but his sadness has also turned into anger over what he sees as deeper problems within Hollywood.

Chatwin, who worked with Panettiere on her final film, said her struggles highlighted the lack of meaningful support available to people dealing with trauma and addiction.

The actor’s comments came as Hayden Panettiere’s death at 36 continues to draw attention to the challenges she faced throughout her life and career.

Chatwin did not hide his frustration with the entertainment industry as he reflected on Panettiere’s struggles.

Speaking about his grief, the actor said he was “p-ssed off by a culture he believes does not do enough to care for people dealing with trauma and addiction.

“I’m a man, so I process things by getting p-ssed off,” Chatwin explained in a chat with Fox News Digital. “And so I’m kind of angry that this is the culture that and this is the industry that people aren’t taken care of.”

He argued that the industry benefits from performers’ work while failing to provide enough support when they are struggling.

Chatwin added that “there’s not enough support or awareness around these issues,” describing trauma and addiction as problems that extend beyond Hollywood.

Beyond his criticism of Hollywood, Chatwin was clearly affected and angered by the loss of Panettiere, whom he remembered fondly from their time working together.

He described her as one of his favorite people to have worked with and recalled her kindness during their final project.

“We went out to dinner after we wrapped the movie and, yeah, she was one of the top five, top 10 favorite people that I’ve ever worked with,” he said. “She was super sweet.”

Chatwin also remembered her as someone with “one of the biggest hearts” among the actors he had worked with.

Despite those warm memories, he said he could recognize the emotional weight Panettiere was carrying.

“I could sense a lot of pain that she had dealt with, from her family to her daughter,” Chatwin said, pointing to the toll that years of Hollywood trauma had taken on her.

During his chat with Fox News Digital, Chatwin recalled enjoying his deep talks with Panettiere, saying, “I really love having deep conversations with her.”

When asked how he believed Panettiere should ultimately be remembered, Chatwin offered a simple description, “She was a unicorn.”

He also recalled that her priorities in life were no longer about another career achievement in Hollywood, and instead, were about finding happiness.

“I think the only focus was to be happy,” Chatwin said of Panettiere.

The Loneliness Pandemic Among Hollywood Actors

Chatwin also spoke about the isolation that can exist behind Hollywood’s glamorous image. He explained that performers can go from receiving constant attention and praise on a film set to returning home alone once the workday ends.

“Sometimes the pain is unbearable, and at the end of the day, you go home from a warm, fun movie set where everyone’s telling you you’re great, and you’re alone in your house, and you still got to order your coffee and eat your dinner,” he said. “It’s a really lonely career.”

For Chatwin, Panettiere’s death has therefore become about more than personal grief. He believes it should prompt a wider conversation about how actors and other performers are supported when the cameras stop rolling.

He also cautioned fellow actors about taking roles that could force them to confront unresolved pain, saying, “I think that actors need to consider what roles they play, especially if it’s opening up a vulnerable trauma that isn’t healed.”
