The Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency and former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has attributed part of Nigeria’s rapid population growth to the country’s poor electricity supply.
Fayose, who spoke after his Inauguration on Friday, said that because of a lack of power, many Nigerians are left with no choice but to stay indoors after dark, which he linked to increased family time.
“When you don’t address the issue of electricity, by 7 o’clock it gets dark, and people start engaging with their wives, so the population doubles,” he said.

According to him, the absence of electricity forces people to go to bed early, adding that “their minds are already prepared for it.”
“If this is the only option available, they simply stay at home. But if we address the electricity problem, there will be nightlife and recreation outside our wives,” Fayose added.
