Iran fired missiles at United States forces in Jordan on Sunday, launching a retaliatory attack just hours after the American military struck Iranian launchers near the Strait of Hormuz.
Nearly all of the incoming missiles were intercepted and there were no immediate reports of significant damage, according to a U.S. source cited by Fox News.
The attack came after U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island, marking the first known American strikes inside Iran since late July. United States officials said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces had been preparing rockets capable of deploying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz when the launchers were hit.
The U.S. military had only recently finished clearing sea mines from international shipping routes through the strait.
Tehran wasted little time vowing revenge.
“Retesting our will only makes the cost of your humiliating defeats even heavier,” Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s national security commission, wrote on X.
Azizi threatened a response that would be “devastating, more painful, and instructive” before telling Washington to “wait in fear and terror.”
Then came an even more blunt warning.
“Retaliation is coming,” Azizi wrote. “JUST RUN!”
The IRGC separately condemned the American operation, with spokesman Hossein Mohebi calling the strike a “strategic and fatal mistake” and warning that the United States would face consequences.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the U.S. strike killed and left several Iranian fighters and civilians hurt.
The exchange threatens to reignite direct fighting after weeks without a known American strike inside Iran. Before Sunday, the last known U.S. strikes against Iran came in late July.
