The incumbent governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has won his re-election bid after defeating 14 other candidates in the state’s governorship election.
Adeleke of the Accord Party was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer, Joshua Ogunwole, on Sunday morning at the commission’s headquarters in Osogbo, the state capital.
According to the final results announced by INEC, Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 444,815 votes.
Adeleke also won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji emerged victorious in 11 local government areas.
The final results released by INEC showed the performance of all participating political parties:
Accord – 511,067 votes
APC – 444,815 votes
ADC – 17,180 votes
AAC – 1,458 votes
ADP – 2,946 votes
APGA – 1,474 votes
APM – 234 votes
APP – 114 votes
BP – 111 votes
NNPP – 118 votes
PRP – 83 votes
SDP – 155 votes
YPP – 534 votes
ZLP – 2,482 votes
A total of 1,010,604 voters were accredited for the election, while 1,005,800 votes were cast. Of the votes cast, 985,079 were declared valid, while 20,721 were rejected.
The result means Adeleke will continue as governor of Osun State after securing another term in office.
His victory came after a competitive contest involving 15 candidates, with the incumbent ultimately securing the highest number of votes across the state.
