Kano Senator Rufai Hanga Resigns From NDC

The Senate Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Rufai Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has resigned his membership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Hanga announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the NDC Ward Chairman in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The resignation letter, issued from the senator’s office and personally signed by him, stated that his decision took immediate effect.

“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” the letter read.

Hanga said he arrived at the decision after “careful reflection and personal deliberation”, explaining that he wanted to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.

“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths,” he stated.

The senator expressed appreciation to the party leadership and members of Dakata Ward for the support and fellowship he received during his membership of the NDC.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party.

“I cherish the relationships built and the experiences shared during our political activities together,” he wrote.

Hanga also said he had attached his official NDC membership card to the resignation letter and requested that his name be removed from the party’s register at the ward level.

“Please find attached my official NDC membership card. I request that my name be formally removed from the party register at the ward level. I wish the party and its members all the best in their future endeavours,” he added.

The senator did not disclose his next political destination or indicate whether he would join another political party.

His resignation, however, could trigger speculation about a possible political realignment ahead of future elections.
